As a student of history, this event was a showcase for how wealthy owners and employers would, and could, abuse and exploit workers with impunity. This fire, the circumstances of the employee's deaths and the rise of awareness and worker's rights in America are a cruel but fair reminder that left to their own devices, in the absence of regulation and scrutiny, owners will revert to abuse and exploitation. While mangement and labor are both capable of getting out of balance with a competitive reality from time to time, some things never change - and owners taking advantage of workers to improve their wealth or return a dividend to shareholders remains a central, motivating force. We must remain diligent and ever mindful!
