About this event
This event honors the publication of Wai Wah Chan’s Chinatown Heroes and draws a historical bridge between the 1982 Garment Workers Strike and Chinatown, a decade later, in the 1990s. Winifred Chin, co-author of Paper Son: One Man’s Story and former NYU Adjunct, will moderate a discussion with veterans of the strike. May Chen, retired ILGWU leader and translator of the book, will lead a discussion about the resonance of the strike in the decades that followed. We will also show a film by Betty Yu.
The event is cosponsored by LaborArts, NYU’s Asian Pacific American Institute, and the Tamiment Library and Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives at NYU Special Collections.
Speakers
Katie Quan, Muzaffar Chisti, Edgar Romney, Winifred Chin, Silvia Chan, Mei Lum, and May Chen.
