Processional and Mourning Dances — Anabella Lenzu/DanceDrama

March 25, 2011 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

A group of 15 dancers will perform in the procession/parade, organized by LuLu LoLo. The choreography of Anabella Lenzu/DanceDrama is a testimony to what happened in the fire, which deeply affected worker’s rights & the social foundations of community life.

“I use white handkerchiefs that reference traditional folk dance in Argentina, as well as the ‘Lamentatrice/Piangenti’ which were the women who were professional mourners for the dead in Southern Italy. Organizing layers of character driven drama and breaking apart quotidian social gestures. My movement vocabulary is a window through which I see under the make-up and below the mask of one’s public identity.”

Anabella Lenzu/DanceDrama is thought provoking and historically conscious dance-theater company, breaking down the wall separating artist from audience. Based in New York, the mission of AL/DD is to establish and develop a cultural, educational and artistic exchange between the communities of the United States, Argentina & Italy.

Lenzu crosses sociopolitical and cultural barriers, promoting dance and art education through teaching and performing.
AL/DD explores themes of collective memory, individual identity, and social awareness by having dancers and audience fuse in a psychological and emotional experience. The repertory is an uncommon blend of modern dance, theater, ballet and ethnographic folk traditions.
