Triangle Shirtwaist Fire Centennial:
Poetry Reading to Benefit WFC, Brattleboro, Vermont
A hundred years ago on March 25, 1911, the worst fire in New York City history prior to 9/11 was the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire. Just before quitting time, a fire started on the upper two floors of the shirtwaist factory and within a half hour the raging fire was extinguished, leaving 146 dead, mostly immigrant young women factory workers. Because the factory owners locked the doors, they were tried for murder, but were acquitted. This tragedy mobilized the labor and women’s rights movements and led to modern day fire codes. While New York City will be honoring the victims with a march and numerous events, in Brattleboro the Centennial will be commemorated with a poetry reading on Friday, March 25, 2011 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Dianich Gallery, 139 Main Street in the Hooker Dunham Building. Donations will be accepted for the Women’s Freedom Center. For more information: Diana, 254-4313.
