This is a painting I did after first learning about the Triangle Fire. I was struck by the tragic irony of 146 lives lost over small pieces of cloth. The door was locked to keep workers from stealing pieces of lace and as they left work each day, they had to open their satchels to show they hadn’t taken anything. This locked door prevented escape from the fire.
