Webinar: Putting It to the Test- The New Deal Faces the Voters in the 1936 Election

October 28 @ 8:00 pm – 9:30 pm EDT

This Living New Deal webinar discusses the critical 1936 national elections, and what they can tell us about this year’s midterms.

The country was in turmoil in the months leading up to the election with a president, who many hated, championing a bold new idea of government. Radical rebellions threatened both parties from within, while fascists, communists, socialists, big money, and a rogue Supreme Court, promised to up end the whole system. Plans for a military coup were even exposed by a Marine general. President Franklin Roosevelt had won a landslide victory at the nadir of the Depression in 1932, but now he and his stumbling New Deal would be put before the voters again—with some polls predicting a runaway Republican victory.

Learn how the critical 1936 election did and did not presage this year’s hotly contested midterms.
