SUMMARY:Art Exhibit: "On Immigration and Labor'
DESCRIPTION:American Labor Museum83 Norwood StreetHaledon\, New Jersey 07508 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Immigration and Labor features original contemporary mixed technique artworks by robin holder.  robin holder is a recipient of a Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation:  Artist as Catalyst Grant.  Her artwork is in the collections of the Library of Congress and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. \n\n\n\nAbout the Immigration artworks\, robin holder observes “I was able to reflect upon the question :  “What is An American?” while developing Behind Each Window\, A Voice.  This series was initiated when I received a Brooklyn Arts Council Individual Visual Artist Grant.  The project provided an opportunity to interview a number of first and second generation immigrant neighbors from a range of countries:  Hungary\, Russia\, Ecuador\, Ireland\, Columbia\, The African Diaspora and India.  I experimented with extended approaches to printmaking.  These works were created by collaging of painting\, collage and printmaking techniques\, photograpahic lithography\, Xerox litho\, monoprinting with relief inked stencils\, photo silkscreen\, archival inkjet printing and photo silkscreen.  The works feature portraits that highlight diverse experiences and challenges.  I use the elements of doors and windows to signify the foundation of identity\, home\, neighborhood\, community and society.” \n\n\n\nThe Labor artworks feature robin holder’s pandemic First Responders.  robin holder explains\, “We’re in it together\, but COVID-19 impacts Black and Brown communities disproportionately.  We depend on our First Responders and Healthcare Workers to keep our society functioning.  Yet many of these heroes are people of color\, who are not receiving adequate wages\, healthcare\, child care\, benefits of pension plans.”  Construction workers are featured in other artworks\, created a decade ago\, with the expanding definition of “essential workers.”  And\, Labor Day\, from robin holder’s Our Social Skin series\, created in the shape of a stockbroker’s vest\, is displayed.  Our Social Skin is composed of artist books that question assumptions of cultural\, social and racial identity as referenced in the ten official holidays of the United States.  They reveal historic institutional conflicts of our communal identity. \n\n\n\nThis program is made possible in part by a grant administered by the Passaic County Cultural and Heritage Council from funds granted by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.  \n\n\n\nOn Immigration and Labor exhibit by robin holder will be on view at the Museum through December 31st\, 2022. \n\n\n\nMore information at www.labormuseum.net

SUMMARY:Workers Unite Film Festival Celebrates Global Labor Solidarity
DESCRIPTION:Schedule and tickets at www.workersunitefilmfestival.org \n\n\n\nThe Workers Unite Film Festival is a celebration of Global Labor Solidarity and New York’s only labor film festival. The Festival aims to showcase student and professional films from the United States and around the world which publicize and highlight the struggles\, successes and daily lives of all workers in their efforts to unite and organize for better living conditions and social justice. The organizers are deeply connected to and support both the American labor movement and the fight of all workers around the globe to achieve lives filled with respect for their rights and dignity on the job. \n\n\n\nThis is the 11th Annual Workers Unite Film Festival – NYC Celebrates Global Labor Solidarity! Our Festival is scheduled between the 100th anniversary of the success of the “Bread and Roses” strike in Lawrence\, MA.\, the 101st anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire\, a rallying point for organizing American workers and May Day\, the international workers day of unity. The Eleventh Annual Workers Unite Film Festival will be held from October 7th to 21st – at the historic downtown Manhattan movie theater\, Cinema Village\, as well as other labor union and community group auditoriums throughout the city. \n\n\n\nWe seek to join forces with our working brothers and sisters from around the world\, both organized in existing unions and those currently fighting to organize for their workplace rights. Our goal is to broadcast our stories of struggle and victory around the mainstream media that often pretend that we – the 99%\, count for less than the celebrities and corporate titans normally showcased in those mainstream media outlets.

DESCRIPTION:Planet Harlem Mural Dedication \n\n\n\nThursday\, October 20th\, 2022 from 6-9pm \n\n\n\n321 Malcom X Blvd New York\, NY 10027 \n\n\n\nFree RSVP \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDesigned by renowned Harlem artist Paul Deo\, this mural is already a popular tourist stop and neighborhood favorite in Harlem. In December of 2018\, the mural was cited in New York Magazine’s 14th Annual “Reasons to Love New York” issue. Given how well known the mural is\, and how it’s been so well received\, it will continue to be an educational and cultural hub where educational tours and cultural tours utilize its portrayal of the great Harlemites. \n\n\n\nPlanet Harlem is Paul’s tribute to the black community; a vehicle for telling and sharing its stories and a potent and much needed tool in the quest for empowerment and well-being during these uncertain times. As this neighborhood continues to gentrify\, it’s deeply important to Paul to engage its local residents in the collective effort to preserve its rich cultural heritage. Beyond this\, he hopes that the demonstration of this process will serve as a beacon of hope for all who understand the power of activating a deeper sense of connection to our own heritage and creative legacy. Perhaps this is why Dr. Henry Louis Gates\, Jr. placed Planet Harlem as the last scene in his The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross – PBS documentary. \n\n\n\nPaul Deo is a Harlem-based multimedia artist and muralist whose black Indian indigenous roots are strongly embedded in his work. Paul’s unique and often thought-provoking cultural lens encapsulates his murals which merge history\, spirit\, and technology to create sacred art spaces for communal dialogue.
