SUMMARY:Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, March 25\, 1911 at the end of the work day\, a fire began on the 8th floor of the Triangle Garment Factory.  Within thirty minutes\, 146 of the 500 workers laboring on floors eight\, nine\, and ten would die. Most were young immigrant women who had gone on strike the year before\, complaining of low pay\, long hours\, unsanitary conditions\, dangerous fires\, locked doors\, and harassing supervisors.  That tragedy provoked outrage\, union movement building\, and led to political reform in New York and states around the country\, eventually influencing Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal legislation of the 1930s. \n\n\n\nIn collaboration with Labor Arts  and the Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition\, Dr. Daniel Katz\, will lead a tour beginning at Cooper Union at Astor Place\, proceeding to the NYU Brown building on Washington Place\, the site of the fire\, and up to Union Square\, where the social justice legacy of the fire continued for a century. DESCRIPTION:From New York to California\, from Italy to Bangladesh\, people remember the 146 workers who died in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in Greenwich Village in 1911. Their deaths galvanized a movement for workers’ rights and workplace safety\, which led to monumental changes that still affect our lives. Mary Anne Trasciatti\, President of Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition\, and co-editor (with Edvige Giunta) of Talking to the Girls: Intimate and Political Essays on the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire\, reflects on various ways the Triangle story continues to inspire activists\, artists\, writers\, teachers\, and scholars in the U.S. and internationally to stand together and fight for a better world. \n\n\n\nMary Anne Trasciatti\, Ph.D. is Professor of Rhetoric and Director of Labor Studies at Hofstra University\, is President of Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition. She is co-editor (with Edvige Giunta) of Talking to the Girls: Intimate and Political Essays on the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire (New Village Press\, 2022). For over a decade\, she has been leading the project to build a permanent memorial to honor the 146 mostly Italian and Jewish immigrant women and girls who died in the 1911 Triangle fire. SUMMARY:Art Exhibit: "On Immigration and Labor'
DESCRIPTION:American Labor Museum83 Norwood StreetHaledon\, New Jersey 07508 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Immigration and Labor features original contemporary mixed technique artworks by robin holder.  robin holder is a recipient of a Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation:  Artist as Catalyst Grant.  Her artwork is in the collections of the Library of Congress and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. \n\n\n\nAbout the Immigration artworks\, robin holder observes “I was able to reflect upon the question :  “What is An American?” while developing Behind Each Window\, A Voice.  This series was initiated when I received a Brooklyn Arts Council Individual Visual Artist Grant.  The project provided an opportunity to interview a number of first and second generation immigrant neighbors from a range of countries:  Hungary\, Russia\, Ecuador\, Ireland\, Columbia\, The African Diaspora and India.  I experimented with extended approaches to printmaking.  These works were created by collaging of painting\, collage and printmaking techniques\, photograpahic lithography\, Xerox litho\, monoprinting with relief inked stencils\, photo silkscreen\, archival inkjet printing and photo silkscreen.  The works feature portraits that highlight diverse experiences and challenges.  I use the elements of doors and windows to signify the foundation of identity\, home\, neighborhood\, community and society.” \n\n\n\nThe Labor artworks feature robin holder’s pandemic First Responders.  robin holder explains\, “We’re in it together\, but COVID-19 impacts Black and Brown communities disproportionately.  We depend on our First Responders and Healthcare Workers to keep our society functioning.  Yet many of these heroes are people of color\, who are not receiving adequate wages\, healthcare\, child care\, benefits of pension plans.”  Construction workers are featured in other artworks\, created a decade ago\, with the expanding definition of “essential workers.”  And\, Labor Day\, from robin holder’s Our Social Skin series\, created in the shape of a stockbroker’s vest\, is displayed.  Our Social Skin is composed of artist books that question assumptions of cultural\, social and racial identity as referenced in the ten official holidays of the United States.  They reveal historic institutional conflicts of our communal identity. \n\n\n\nThis program is made possible in part by a grant administered by the Passaic County Cultural and Heritage Council from funds granted by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.  \n\n\n\nOn Immigration and Labor exhibit by robin holder will be on view at the Museum through December 31st\, 2022. \n\n\n\nMore information at www.labormuseum.net

SUMMARY:Walking Tour Commemorating the 40th Anniversary of 1982 ILGWU Strike in Chinatown\, NYC
DESCRIPTION:In 1982\, a strike — involving upwards of 20\,000 Chinese immigrant women workers in hundreds of garment factories in Manhattan’s Chinatown — revived the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union (ILGWU) and turned the tide of sweatshop labor for a generation. Members of ILGWU Local 23-25 led the strike\, just as their Jewish and Italian sisters had seventy years earlier. Labor Arts and People’s Heritage Tours are conducting a walking tour to commemorate that moment in which yet another group of young immigrant women defied the low expectations of male union leaders and manufacturers to organize and fight against the conditions under which they were forced to work. \n\n\n\nThe tour will begin at the statue of Confucius at Confucius Plaza and walk to Columbus Park\, the site of two mass rallies that electrified the city. The tour will continue through the neighborhood to visit the site of garment factories and other key places in the story of labor activism and community building. Along the way\, we will meet veterans of the Chinese American labor movement of the 1980s. The tour will take place rain or shine. \n\n\n\nThe cost is $40.
