SUMMARY:Layer the Walls - An Immigrant Story Featuring Puppetry\, Masks and Live Action
DESCRIPTION:In one Lower East Side tenement\, forty layers of wallpaper were found clinging to the walls – each piece applied by a new immigrant family.  Using puppetry\, masks and live action\, Layer the Walls tells the incredible stories held within each layer. Through these stories\, young audiences engage their imagination and creativity\, build empathy\, and better understand current events through a historical lens. \n\n\n\nTWO DIFFERENT SHOWS: \n\n\n\nThis year\, we are offering TWO different Layer the Walls experiences. Both are centered in the same tenement apartment. Layer the Walls Part I and Part II illuminate stories from different time periods. Both pieces stand alone. DESCRIPTION:Our friends at the Coalition for Labor Union Women (CLUW) and Global Labor Justice have organized a solidarity vigil on Wednesday\, December 17\, at 5:30pm at the Triangle Fire Memorial (23 Washington Place\, NYU Brown Building)\, for a Sri Lankan garment worker\, Paramsivan Pushpalatha\, who died after seeking medical attention at a Brandix factory in Sri Lanka (supplier to Victoria’s Secret).  \n\n\n\nSince Pushpalatha’s death\, her family\, co-workers and union leaders have faced retaliation and intimidation from Brandix. They have asked supporters to join them. DESCRIPTION:Timed to honor March 25th’s Equal Pay Day\, Workers Unite Film Festival presents a pre-theatrical release of LILLY: a powerful dramatic film based on the remarkable true story of working-class hero\, Lilly Ledbetter\, a hard-working Alabama tire factory supervisor whose singular goal is to lift her family into the middle class. Having grown up in poverty\, she endures a work environment plagued by pervasive harassment for the sake of the best paycheck in the county. As retirement approaches\, Lilly discovers that the system had been cheating her\, paying her close to half of what the men with the same jobs were earning. Outraged\, Lilly fights this injustice to the Supreme Court\, the corridors of Congress and eventually The White House all while powerful forces try to shut her down. SUMMARY:Triangle Fire Yahrzeit Kaddish and Kiddush
DESCRIPTION:The Lower East Side remembers its own.  \n\n\n\nStanton Street often hosts a Triangle Fire Kiddush to remember those who perished in 1911 in a blaze that took the lives of 146 young immigrant sweatshop workers in 18 minutes.  \n\n\n\nThey primarily lived in direct proximity to the Stanton Street Shul since they were poor and needed to walk to work at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory or take a trolley to that industrial sweatshop building located off of Washington Square. Almost all were female\, under the age of 21 which meant that young teens were also “employed” at that sweatshop. They were Jewish and Italian\, typically “greenhorns\,” meaning newcomers who had little choice in employment. Most of those who died did so because the factory fire doors on the 9th floor were locked.  \n\n\n\nServices will be held earlier upstairs for those who want to attend\, and will include prayers for those who died on March 25\, 1911.  \n\n\n\nEven as we remember erstwhile immigrants\, we also think of immigrants today. Remembrance\, which is needed for its own sake\, can openly embrace grappling with that contemporary precarious landscape.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition and Village Preservation for a talk by historian Daniel Levinson Wilk on the historic 1911 fire and its impact on the community and eventually the country and beyond. In “The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire: A Local Tragedy Felt ‘Round the World\,” Professor Levinson Wilk takes us back to the Greenwich Village of the early 1900s\, with its tenements populated by thousands of immigrant families\, and the immigrant laborers\, many of whom worked in area sweatshops. \n\n\n\nThe talk will be accompanied by a pop-up exhibit featuring replica shirtwaists\, historic news clippings and photos. \n\n\n\nDANIEL LEVINSON WILK is Professor of American History at SUNY-Fashion Institute of Technology and a member of the board of the Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition. DESCRIPTION:Hudson River Museum511 Warburton AvenueYonkers\, NY 10701 \n\n\n\nJanuary 5\, 2025 at 3:30 pm \n\n\n\nRobin Berson’s Workers’ Memorial Quilts\, which inspired this hands-on workshop\, honor victims of garment industry disasters that bookended the past century: the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire of 1911 and the Tazreen fire and Rana Plaza collapse of 2012 and 2013 in Bangladesh\, emphasize the human toll\, particularly of marginalized communities\, while questioning the progress made in labor rights amid global outsourcing. The quilts will be on display for this program. \n\n\n\nParticipants of all ages are invited to bring images of people they would like to memorialize. Historical images will also be supplied as encouragement to take on a character and their story and create an abstract representation of the individual using felt and markers\, mounted on a foam core square\, and also capture memories in writing. \n\n\n\nRobin Berson is a board member of the Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition. \n\n\n\nMore information here.

Since Hot Pstromi’s inception in 1981\, Strom has composed original New Jewish music that combines klezmer with Hasidic melodies\, as well as Roma\, jazz\, classical\, Balkan\, Arabic\, and Sephardic motifs. Strom’s compositions range from folk to orchestral\, and works have been performed by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra\, San Diego Chamber Orchestra\, Hausmann Quartet\, Burdick-Thorne String Quartet\, Rachel Barton Pine\, Mike Block\, Bordeaux Philharmonic\, the Ostrava Philharmonic of the Czech Republic\, and others. In addition\, he has composed original music for theater\, film\, and television. \n\n\n\nThe musicians of Hot Pstromi are virtuosos in their own right\, each having achieved international recognition for their work. \n\n\n\nFred Benedetti began studies of classical guitar at 16 and by 26 was one of 12 guitarists worldwide to perform in one of the last masterclasses of Maestro Andres Segovia. He has performed in the United States\, England\, Germany\, the Czech Republic\, Canada\, Taiwan\, and Mexico as well as with the San Diego Symphony\, the San Diego Opera\, the Starlight Opera\, the American Ballet Company\, the Old Globe Theatre\, Luciano Pavarotti\, and jazz artist Dave Brubeck. Fred is an emeritus professor of music at Grossmont College\, where he was the head of the guitar studies program\, and is part of the guitar program at San Diego State University. He has received numerous accolades for his teaching and has performed for dignitaries such as the king and queen of Malaysia\, Mikhail Gorbachev\, and Ravi Shankar. \n\n\n\nGrammy Nominee Sara Caswell is a leading jazz violinist known for her technical mastery and lyrical artistry\, recognized as a “Rising Star” in DownBeat Magazine since 2013. She has released three acclaimed CDs\, including Alive in the Singing Air with her sister Rachel\, and leads the Sara Caswell Quartet while co-leading the Caswell Sisters Quintet. Caswell has toured with artists such as Esperanza Spalding\, David Krakauer\, and Darol Anger\, and is a member of the New York Pops Orchestra\, performing at Carnegie Hall. A faculty member at Berklee College of Music and Manhattan School of Music\, she also conducts jazz improvisation masterclasses\, having studied under renowned mentors Josef Gingold and David Baker.
