Come to the Museum before the program\, or stay afterwards to explore the exhibit! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Panel Discussion Leaders: \n\n\n\nAdrienne Ottenberg is an artist who finds that the places we live in every day are full of meaning and emotion. She hopes to reveal a fresh perspective on the familiar. For this exhibition\, Ottenberg worked with watercolor\, colored pencil\, ink\, and digital media\, resulting in individual collage prints. The banners are introspective portraits of each figure\, inspired by the neighborhood and how it has been mapped. \n\n\n\nOttenberg lives and works in New York City. After years of editorial and book illustration\, she found herself creating maps\, and pursued an MA in geography to learn computer mapping. She is inspired by historical maps and how we create and bring meaning to the map of our own lives. \n\n\n\nAdrienne Andi Sosin\, Ed.D. is a founding member of the Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition. She co-edited the Triangle Fire Memorial Dedication Book\, Arcadia’s The New York City Triangle Factory Fire\, and Organizing the Curriculum: Perspectives on Teaching the American Labor Movement. \n\n\n\nSosin taught Social Studies\, English\, and Literacy in New York City schools\, and Education at Pace University\, City College of New York\, and Adelphi University. She serves as co-president of the Nassau Reading Council. Andi also curates the Resources page. \n\n\n\nKevin Baker is a historian\, novelist\, journalist\, screenwriter\, and playwright. A member of the Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition\, he is proud to have written the inscription for the new monument at the site of the Fire. A writer and researcher on the Ken Burns documentary\, The U.S. and the Holocaust\, Baker is also the author or co-author of five works of history and of six novels\, including Dreamland\, which was inspired by the Triangle Fire. \n\n\n\nA contributing editor at Harper’s Magazine\, he has written for many major publications in the United States and Europe. Currently\, he is at work on a political and cultural history of the United States between the world wars\, while his latest book\, The New York Game: Baseball and the Rise of a New City\, will be published by Knopf this month. He lives in New York with his wife\, playwright\, Ellen Abrams. \n\n\n\nRose Imperato is a long-time member of the Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition and currently sits on its board of directors as vice chair. She is honored to be part of the decade-long effort to build the Triangle Fire Memorial to the workers and legacy of the 1911 fire. She is also employed as a special projects coordinator for the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies\, an organization she has been a part of since 2012. \n\n\n\nFor many years\, Imperato worked as a radio broadcaster and producer in New York\, Texas\, and Florida. In Austin\, TX\, she helped produce the International Women’s Day Community Media Festival: 24 hours of radio\, television\, and internet programming simulcast on several regional media outlets\, all produced by women about issues of interest to women. The Triangle Fire and the history of reform and activism inspired by the tragedy was a focal point of the Festival. Rose holds a master’s degree in communications and a master’s certificate in women’s studies from Syracuse University\, and an undergraduate degree from SUNY Stony Brook. \n\n\n\nThe New York City Labor Chorus\, representing over 20 labor unions and District Councils\, was founded in 1991 and promotes union solidarity by expressing through song the history and ongoing struggles of workers for economic and social justice. The Chorus’s dynamic repertoire combines the power and culture of union music with the great gospel\, jazz\, classical and folk traditions. \n\n\n\nOrganized labor\, united with its community allies\, is an irrepressible social force. This is the message of the New York City Labor Chorus.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibition: On the Lower East Side: 28 Remarkable Women...and One Scoundrel
DESCRIPTION:Museum at Eldridge Street12 Eldridge Street New York\, NY 10002 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe Museum at Eldridge Street is proud to present a new exhibition featuring 29 women who lived or worked on the Lower East Side of New York at the turn of the twentieth century. Their mixed media portraits by artist Adrienne Ottenberg incorporate maps of the Lower East Side neighborhood and are printed on silk or cotton banners that will be hung throughout the Museum’s gallery and historic sanctuary. Stories about the women highlight the work\, life\, and impact they made culturally\, on social justice movements\, and more. \n\n\n\nThose featured in the exhibition include political activist Frances Perkins\, who upon witnessing the tragic Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire\, took on an influential role in the workers-rights advocacy movement\, which led her to eventually become President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Secretary of Labor–the first ever woman cabinet member; suffragette and activist Mabel Ping-Hua Lee who campaigned for women’s rights to vote and was the first Chinese woman in the United States to earn her doctorate; and public healthcare worker Elizabeth Tyler\, who was the first Black nurse hired at Henry Street Settlement\, and went on later to establish the Stillman House Settlement on Manhattan’s West Side\, which provided health care and social services to the Black community in San Juan Hill.  The show will be accompanied by an audio guide through Bloomberg Connects in which 29 people–Eldridge docents\, staffers\, the artist\, and descendants of the historic women–speak the parts of those portrayed in the show. \n\n\n\n​Adrienne Ottenberg lives and works in New York City. Her work combines traditional drawing and painting with digital media. After many years doing editorial and book illustration\, she found herself creating maps\, and subsequently earned an MA in geography at CUNY to learn computer mapping. She has illustrated more than a dozen books\, created frontispiece maps and endpapers\, and created illustrated maps for gallery shows. SUMMARY:Breaking the Glass Ceiling: Eleanor Roosevelt and Frances Perkins Embrace Politics and Power for Women
DESCRIPTION:Roosevelt House\, together with the New York City Chapter of the Living New Deal\, is pleased to present a discussion of the women who supported Eleanor Roosevelt and Frances Perkins in their path breaking endeavors to rescue the nation and create a better future. The panel will feature preeminent Eleanor Roosevelt biographer Blanche Wiesen Cook and Roosevelt House historian Deborah Gardner\, and will be moderated by professor emerita of American history at Columbia University Alice Kessler-Harris. \n\n\n\nWhen Eleanor Roosevelt and Frances Perkins went to Washington in March 1933\, they did so with the support of millions of women who had voted for FDR’s promise of a “New Deal”—including those in the political and social welfare networks with whom they had worked for more than two decades. Among the more significant of those groups were the leaders of the women’s divisions of the Democratic party\, the Women’s City Club\, the League of Women Voters\, peace activists\, and the Women’s Trade Union League. Incoming Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins\, who shared many of Eleanor Roosevelt’s interests and values\, was also connected\, through her time with the New York State Industrial Commission\, to the leading consumer protection groups and advocates for retirement and employment protection plans. \n\n\n\nSecretary Perkins supported the women from networks who were already working in the Department of Labor\, and brought along others\, who helped her launch some of the New Deal’s most consequential programs—which the First Lady then promoted in her speeches and columns\, and during her travels. Those groundbreaking initiatives included: the Civilian Conservation Corps\, Social Security\, minimum wage\, worker’s compensation\, unemployment insurance\, and a ban on child labor. \n\n\n\nBlanche Wiesen Cook (’62) is Distinguished Professor of History and Women’s Studies at John Jay College and the CUNY Graduate Center\, and former vice-president for research at the American Historical Association. Her definitive three-volume biography of Eleanor Roosevelt was called “monumental and inspirational…[a] grand biography” by the New York Times. Volume One\, on the Times bestseller list for three months\, received many awards\, including the 1992 Biography Prize from the Los Angeles Times\, and the Lambda Literary Award. Volume Two was also a Times bestseller. She has been a guest commentator about Eleanor Roosevelt on numerous news programs as well as Ken Burns’ seven-part PBS documentary series\, The Roosevelts: An Intimate History. \n\n\n\nDeborah Gardner has served as the Roosevelt House Historian and Curator since 2010. A Hunter College staff member since 2001\, she assisted in the development of Roosevelt House’s new role as the college’s public policy institute. She is an expert on the history of the Roosevelts in New York and their New Deal associates\, among them Frances Perkins\, and has curated numerous exhibits on Roosevelt history and designed tours of the house as well as at New Deal sites in the city. She has published on legal history\, women’s history\, and the history of the city\, and served on the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission. She is an active member of the New York City chapter of the Living New Deal. \n\n\n\nAlice Kessler-Harris is R. Gordon Hoxie Professor Emerita of American History at Columbia University\, Professor Emerita in the Institute for Research on Women and Gender\, and former president of the Organization of American Historians. She specializes in the history of American labor and the comparative and interdisciplinary exploration of women and gender. Her books include: In Pursuit of Equity: Women\, Men and the Quest for Economic Citizenship in Twentieth Century America (2001); A Woman’s Wage: Historical Meanings and Social Consequences (1990); A Difficult Woman: The Challenging Life and Times of Lillian Hellman (2012); and\, as co-editor\, Protecting Women: Labor Legislation in Europe\, Australia\, and the United States\, 1880-1920 (1995). In 2020\, she was honored with the “Intelligence and Courage Award” from the Frances Perkins Center. \n\n\n\nMore information and RSVP at www.roosevelthouse.hunter.cuny.edu

The “Collective Ribbon” exhibition tells the story of a unique participatory process in the design of the memorial. Our community of people from all walks of life came together and sewed a long ribbon made of hundreds of pieces of fabric. Gathered across long rows of sewing tables\, the participants created a tapestry of personal fragments\, stories and memories of the Triangle Fire. The texture of this collective ribbon is now etched into the steel of the permanent memorial for the Triangle Fire\, making a lasting reminder of the many individual voices and stories that were\, and still are\, interwoven with the story and the legacy of the Triangle Fire. Memorials hold a unique place in the field of architecture insofar as their form is subservient to a story. Richard Joon Yoo and Eric Moed’s built monuments and memorials weave together each memory’s components; the people\, the place\, the time\, the event – closely examining and processing context\, and in doing so boldly and strategically reframe each story. This constructed narrative directs the design process with respect to materiality\, technology and the performance of making. ‘The Matter of Memory’ encompasses an explosion of the process by which Yoo and Moed design through their built work. Through the act of reframing the story\, the frame being what we typically describe as architecture\, memorials have the potential to heighten the sensation of the present to provoke change through the creation of a more equitable and just future. Architecture is the device we design to frame space\, experience\, and memory all at once. The lecture and parallel exhibition will prompt you to critically ask — what is the architecture of reframing? If a memory is reframed each time it is remembered\, if our experience with the built environment is reframed with each encounter\, how do the ephemeral and ever changing contents of memory relate to their material container of architecture? And importantly\, how can we design to provoke impactful\, meaningful and lasting change in the present to inform the future? \n\n\n\nRichard Joon Yoo is an architectural designer\, artist\, teacher\, and writer. His work focuses on memory —memorials and monuments— specifically the ability of the built environment to heighten the present and provoke the future through the careful positioning of memory\, context\, and material. He is co-designer of the Triangle Fire Memorial \n\n\n\nEric Moed’s practice exists at the intersection of architecture\, public art and design\, examining the relationship between memory\, narrative and public space. He has designed monuments and memorials globally with a focus on marginalized memories and restorative justice. DESCRIPTION:September 6-14\, 2023 \n\n\n\nAbrons Arts Center466 Grand Street (at Pitt Street)New York\, NY 10002 \n\n\n\nObjects of Permanence\, a special installation curated by Mellány Sánchez and presented during New York Fashion Week\, seeks to spotlight the rich histories of the Puerto Rican and other migrant community labor forces in New York City’s garment industry.This show spotlights the Lower East Side as a pioneering capital of the garment industry in the mid-20th century. Objects in the form of artifacts\, both real and imagined\, work to preserve and tell the story of LES residents of the past and present\, whose labor was integral to the development of New York City as a fashion capital. Simultaneously\, it will unite these voices of the past to the direct descendants and beneficiaries of their legacy—today’s fashion designers.As a nod to the Tenement Museum’s exhibition Saez Velez Family Story\, the installation also features historical objects\, such as shears\, photographs and more\, on loan from the Tenement Museum\, the first time a large trove of objects have been lent outside the institution. \n\n\n\nSPECIAL NOTE: Remember the Triangle Fire Coalitioners LuLu LoLo and May Chen contributed to this exhibition. Three memorial shirtwaists with the named sashes of Anna Altman\, Santina Salemi (one of the girls from Cherry Street)\, and Daisy Lopez Fitze will be displayed. And LuLu also loaned the exhibit “a union label scissor sharpener that belonged to my mother.” Also on loan to the exhibit is an historic union label skirt. As May Chen explains\, “When I started working for the union in 1983\, the Union Label Department designed and ordered reams of fabric for union members to make things – like this skirt\, blouses or tops\, dresses\, and even potholders and table covers. At union conventions\, they would have fashion shows and exhibit of the things made by members and local unions. Local 23-25 and especially Kathy Andrade (the Education Director) was very proud of their union label products. This specific fabric pre-dates my time at the union – the textile designs changed from time to time. You’ll see a more pastel pattern in photos of the 1982 strike. This skirt probably was made by Local 23-25 members in the 1970s – it is very typical of clothing worn in parades (Labor Day)\, rallies and demonstrations (members giving out flyers\, for example)\, union chorus performances.” \n\n\n\nObjects of Permanence is open to the public from 12:45-6:15pm\, with ticketed guided tours taking place twice each day. \n\n\n\nMore information at www.abronsartscenter.org

During the past 60 years\, the Originals (original cooperators) have persevered through creativity and struggle in this bold experiment for thousands of people that still exists to this day. Over the past year\, current cooperators at the Penn South Archive Project recorded the stories of the Originals to create a collective record of their experience. “The Originals” is a short documentary based on these conversations. \n\n\n\n“A Teenager’s Guide to Penn South\,” a new short film by teenagers and lifelong cooperators Silvie Bird\, Olive Eng\, and Fiona Shuldiner\, will also be screened. \n\n\n\nLive music (performers to be announced). \n\n\n\nThe event is sponsored by the Penn South Archive Project\, organized by the Education Committee of Penn South Social Services. \n\n\n\nHave questions?
