DESCRIPTION:NYU Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò and Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition \n\n\n\nPresent \n\n\n\nCollective Ribbon:The Interwoven Voices of the Triangle Fire Memorial \n\n\n\nOctober 9\, 2023 – December 15\, 2023 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAn Exhibition Curated byRichard Joon Yoo and Uri WegmanCo-designers of the Triangle Fire Memorial \n\n\n\nSpecial Note: Exhibition includes a sewing machine that survived the 1911 Triangle Fire \n\n\n\nOn viewOctober 9\, 2023 – March 29\, 2024Mon-Fri 10-6 \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nA permanent memorial for the victims of the Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire is being erected on the site of the fire near Washington Square\, more than a century after the fire and neglect killed 146 workers\, mainly young immigrant women of Italian and Jewish descent. The “Collective Ribbon” exhibition tells the story of a unique participatory process in the design of the memorial. Our community of people from all walks of life came together and sewed a long ribbon made of hundreds of pieces of fabric. Gathered across long rows of sewing tables\, the participants created a tapestry of personal fragments\, stories and memories of the Triangle Fire. The texture of this collective ribbon is now etched into the steel of the permanent memorial for the Triangle Fire\, making a lasting reminder of the many individual voices and stories that were\, and still are\, interwoven with the story and the legacy of the Triangle Fire. NOV 06\, 2023 @ 6:30–8:00PMRSVP Link for Lecture\n\n\n\nOur experience of the built environment is reframed with each encounter\, much like a memory is reframed each time it is remembered. Memorials hold a unique place in the field of architecture insofar as their form is subservient to a story. Richard Joon Yoo and Eric Moed’s built monuments and memorials weave together each memory’s components; the people\, the place\, the time\, the event – closely examining and processing context\, and in doing so boldly and strategically reframe each story. This constructed narrative directs the design process with respect to materiality\, technology and the performance of making. ‘The Matter of Memory’ encompasses an explosion of the process by which Yoo and Moed design through their built work. Through the act of reframing the story\, the frame being what we typically describe as architecture\, memorials have the potential to heighten the sensation of the present to provoke change through the creation of a more equitable and just future. Architecture is the device we design to frame space\, experience\, and memory all at once. The lecture and parallel exhibition will prompt you to critically ask — what is the architecture of reframing? If a memory is reframed each time it is remembered\, if our experience with the built environment is reframed with each encounter\, how do the ephemeral and ever changing contents of memory relate to their material container of architecture? And importantly\, how can we design to provoke impactful\, meaningful and lasting change in the present to inform the future? \n\n\n\nRichard Joon Yoo is an architectural designer\, artist\, teacher\, and writer. His work focuses on memory —memorials and monuments— specifically the ability of the built environment to heighten the present and provoke the future through the careful positioning of memory\, context\, and material. He is co-designer of the Triangle Fire Memorial \n\n\n\nEric Moed’s practice exists at the intersection of architecture\, public art and design\, examining the relationship between memory\, narrative and public space. He has designed monuments and memorials globally with a focus on marginalized memories and restorative justice. SUMMARY:Objects of Permanence: Installation Spotlighting the Rich Histories of the Puerto Rican and Other Migrant Community Labor Forces in NYC’s Garment Industry
DESCRIPTION:September 6-14\, 2023 \n\n\n\nAbrons Arts Center466 Grand Street (at Pitt Street)New York\, NY 10002 \n\n\n\nObjects of Permanence\, a special installation curated by Mellány Sánchez and presented during New York Fashion Week\, seeks to spotlight the rich histories of the Puerto Rican and other migrant community labor forces in New York City’s garment industry.This show spotlights the Lower East Side as a pioneering capital of the garment industry in the mid-20th century. Objects in the form of artifacts\, both real and imagined\, work to preserve and tell the story of LES residents of the past and present\, whose labor was integral to the development of New York City as a fashion capital. Simultaneously\, it will unite these voices of the past to the direct descendants and beneficiaries of their legacy—today’s fashion designers.As a nod to the Tenement Museum’s exhibition Saez Velez Family Story\, the installation also features historical objects\, such as shears\, photographs and more\, on loan from the Tenement Museum\, the first time a large trove of objects have been lent outside the institution. \n\n\n\nSPECIAL NOTE: Remember the Triangle Fire Coalitioners LuLu LoLo and May Chen contributed to this exhibition. Three memorial shirtwaists with the named sashes of Anna Altman\, Santina Salemi (one of the girls from Cherry Street)\, and Daisy Lopez Fitze will be displayed. And LuLu also loaned the exhibit “a union label scissor sharpener that belonged to my mother.” Also on loan to the exhibit is an historic union label skirt. As May Chen explains\, “When I started working for the union in 1983\, the Union Label Department designed and ordered reams of fabric for union members to make things – like this skirt\, blouses or tops\, dresses\, and even potholders and table covers. At union conventions\, they would have fashion shows and exhibit of the things made by members and local unions. Local 23-25 and especially Kathy Andrade (the Education Director) was very proud of their union label products. This specific fabric pre-dates my time at the union – the textile designs changed from time to time. You’ll see a more pastel pattern in photos of the 1982 strike. This skirt probably was made by Local 23-25 members in the 1970s – it is very typical of clothing worn in parades (Labor Day)\, rallies and demonstrations (members giving out flyers\, for example)\, union chorus performances.” \n\n\n\nObjects of Permanence is open to the public from 12:45-6:15pm\, with ticketed guided tours taking place twice each day. \n\n\n\nMore information at www.abronsartscenter.org

DESCRIPTION:The Originals: a short documentary by award-winning filmmaker Ruth Sergel in collaboration with the Penn South Archive Project.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLOCATION:Church of the Holy Apostles 296 9th Avenue New York\, NY 10001 \n\n\n\nPenn South\, officially known as Mutual Redevelopment Houses\, Inc.\, is an affordable cooperative housing community located in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan\, in the heart of New York City. \n\n\n\nJoin us for an afternoon of celebration of the unique history of Penn South. “The Originals\,” a short documentary based on oral histories recorded by cooperators over the past year\, will have its premiere screening on Saturday\, May 6\, 2023\, at 1 pm. \n\n\n\nIn 1962\, the ILGWU (International Ladies’ Garment Workers Union) welcomed the first cooperators to Penn South\, an affordable-housing coop in the middle of New York City. During the past 60 years\, the Originals (original cooperators) have persevered through creativity and struggle in this bold experiment for thousands of people that still exists to this day. She has spent more than a decade researching and writing a biography of Rose. Annie was awarded the Eichleberger-Linzer Grant from the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library in Hyde Park\, New York. She has traveled from Maine to Washington—including a visit to the Roosevelt House in New York—to deliver captivating\, multi-media talks on Rose and the Triangle Fire\, including presentations about Rose at the conference “Frances Perkins and Progressive and New Deal Eras” in 2009 at the University of Southern Maine and at the 2019 Maine Suffrage Centennial. In 2021\, she presented Rose and the Triangle Fire\, at a meeting of Local One of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE). In 2022\, she spoke at Vassar College along with descendants of Harriet Stanton Blatch and Inez Milholland Boissevaine\, at a dedication of a historical marker commemorating the “Suffrage in the cemetery” rally in 1908\, as a part of the National Votes for Women Trail. She has written articles on Schneiderman\, the Uprising of the 20\,000\, and the Triangle fire for the Oxford Encyclopedia of American Business\, Labor\, and Economic History (2013). In 2015\, she published the article “Rose Schneiderman” on her great-aunt’s suffrage activism for the Turning Point Suffragist Memorial Association.

Wagner Labor Archive at the NYU Special Collections. \n\n\n\n**************************************************** \n\n\n\n2022 COMMERFORD HONOREES \n\n\n\nDorothy Sue Cobble is an American historian\, and a specialist in the study of work\, social movements\, and social policy.  A distinguished professor emerita of history and labor studies at Rutgers University\, she is the author of multiple prize-winning books\, including Dishing It Out: Waitresses and Their Unions in the Twentieth Century (1991)\, The Other Women’s Movement: Workplace Justice and Social Rights in Modern America (2005)\, and The Sex of Class: Women Transforming American Labor (2007).Her most recent book\, For the Many: American Feminists and the Global Fight for Democratic Equality\, reveals the grit\, courage\, and wisdom of the women who led the fight for economic justice and social democracy in the United States and abroad. Her next book draws on the far-seeing ideas of labor thinkers of the past to help us reimagine a fairer\, more inclusive America. Cobble grew up in a blue-collar family in Atlanta in the 1950s. She credits her passion for issues of justice and inequality to the fierce debates about civil and human rights that surrounded her in high school\, to the sermons she heard in church\, and to her father’s pioneering work on minimum-wage legislation in Georgia as a lobbyist for the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. The jobs she held while completing her education profoundly shaped her thinking about work and labor reform. She worked as a waitress\, receptionist\, file clerk\, union ship-scaler and stevedore\, and eventually as an editorial assistant at TV Guide Magazine before receiving a B.A. degree in American Studies\, cum laude\, from the University of California at Berkeley and a Ph.D. in History from Stanford University. After directing the City College of San Francisco Labor Studies Program from 1980 to 1986\, Cobble moved to Rutgers\, where she founded the Center for Women and Work and taught classes for college students\, working adults\, and trade unionists. Recent honors include an Honorary Doctorate of Social Science from Stockholm University in 2017\, and election to the Society of American Historians in 2018. \n\n\n\nMelvyn Dubofsky has been an activist scholar and pioneering labor historian since the 1960s\, helping to advance the field of “new labor history\,” which focuses on the experiences of workers and social movements rather than institutions. A distinguished professor emeritus of history at Binghamton University\, he has written extensively about the role of politics and state action in the changing fortunes of the American labor movement\, and he stresses the role culture and the development of capitalism play in the American labor movement.  \n\n\n\nAt the Fernand Braudel Center at Binghamton his research has looked at how changing technology\, such as automation\, has driven worker activism. Dubofsky has taught and participated in collaborative projects with other scholars in England\, Israel\, Austria\, the Netherlands\, France\, and the former Soviet Union. \n\n\n\nHe grew up in the middle of the last century in a Brooklyn far different from today\, where most neighborhoods were drawn on ethnic lines\, with distinctly mixed class compositions with working people\, petty proprietors\, and even professionals (doctors\, dentists\, and attorneys) living next door to each other. His high school in Bedford Stuyvesant (Brooklyn’s version of Harlem) was the borough’s most diverse school\, with a substantial Black student body and a small white majority of mostly Jewish\, Italian\, and Irish teens. The impact of the Senator McCarthy fueled “red scare” was personal: his high school economics teacher and four of his first-year college teachers lost their jobs for refusing to name names during state or federal investigations. Those experiences led him\, in graduate school\, toward studying the history of working people\, a field of study that did not exist in the 1950s. \n\n\n\nAmong his most notable books are When Workers Organize: New York City in the Progressive Era (1967)\, We Shall Be All: A History of the Industrial Workers of the World (1969)\, John L. Lewis: A Biography (1977\, co-written with Warren Van Tine); The State and Labor in Modern America (1994); and Hard Work: The Making of a Labor Historian (2001). Currently\, he is editing a two-volume history of American Economic\, Business\, and Labor History for Oxford University Press. \n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Sidney Cox Library of Music and Dance Cornell UniversityIthaca\, NY \n\n\n\nThe International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union produced the hit musical Pins and Needles\, which ran on Broadway from 1937-1940. For the topical skits spoofing current events\, workers moved from their sewing machines on the factory floor to the theatrical stage. “Songs to Leave You in Stitches: The Story of the ILGWU’s Musical Pins & Needles” explores the history\, social context\, and music of this important labor musical. \n\n\n\n“Songs to Leave You in Stitches” is the first of three “Fashioning Music” exhibits affiliated with Threads of History: Textiles at Cornell\, a series of exhibits organized by Cornell University Library in honor of the acquisition of the library and archives of the former American Textile History Museum\, whose mission had been to “tell America’s stories through textiles.” Highlighting materials from the former American Textile History Museum\, existing items from Cornell’s collections\, and original artwork\, Threads of History honors the storytelling\, history\, and artistry of textiles and those who labor to create them. \n\n\n\nThe exhibit is free and open to the public at the Sidney Cox Library of Music and Dance\, Cornell University\, during regular Music Library hours.

DESCRIPTION:November 20 @ 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm \n\n\n\nMuseum at Eldridge Street12 Eldridge StreetNew York\, NY 10002 \n\n\n\nAnnouncing the East Coast debut of Yale Strom’s moving cantata in honor of those lost in the Triangle Factory Fire of 1911. \n\n\n\nYale Strom composed the cantata “Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire” in 2011 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the tragic fire of March 25\, 1911. The Triangle Waist Company factory occupied the top three floors of the ten-story Asch Building on the corner of Greene Street and Washington Place in Greenwich Village. The factory normally employed about five hundred workers\, mostly young Italian and Jewish immigrant women and girls aged fourteen to twenty-three\, who worked nine hours a day on weekdays plus seven hours on Saturdays\, earning for their 52 hours of work between $7 and $12 a week. \n\n\n\nThe cantata\, which includes English\, Yiddish and Italian poetry\, will take the listener from a normal workday\, to when the fire began\, to after the tragedy when 146 garment workers loss their lives. SUMMARY:Pay Your Workers Rally
DESCRIPTION:Adidas Flagship 565 Fifth Avenue\, Manhattan\, NYC \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDuring the pandemic\, brands stole millions in unpaid wages\, benefits and severance from garment workers. Corporations exploited the pandemic to undermine labor rights and retaliate against unions and workers organizing.  An international union coalition has been formed\, led by unions in Cambodia\, Bangladesh\, and Sri Lanka demanding that adidas meet with garment workers\, pay them money stolen during the pandemic\, and respect labor rights across the supply chain. The campaign has been progressing since our first international action in July. In August we had actions in 10 cities. Adidas has so far refused to meet with the garment worker unions\, and now a global week of action has been called for October 24-30\, demanding that adidas negotiate with the workers that make their apparel. So far we have actions planned in over 20 cities\, including Jakarta\, Dhaka\, Berlin and Milan.  \n\n\n\nOn October 29th at 11:00 am there will be an action at the Adidas flagship location at 565 Fifth Avenue. North America is a key market to Adidas; they are seeking to grow their market share and are vulnerable to US public opinion.
