SUMMARY:Art as Memorial: Artist and Activist Talks
DESCRIPTION:Hudson River Museum511 Warburton AvenueYonkers\, NY 10701 \n\n\n\nJanuary 5\, 2025 at 1:00 pm \n\n\n\nThis three-part program invites participants to explore memorialization through the lens of two significant global crises: the mistreatment of garment workers and the marginalization of the LGBTQ+ community during the AIDS crisis. The afternoon includes talks and a hands-on collage workshop. \n\n\n\nThe program begins with artist Rachel Breen discussing her installation Shroud\, on view in No Bodies: Clothing as Disruptor\, and HRM’s Laura Vookles\, Chair of the Curatorial Department\, drawing connections to Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s Untitled (L.A.)\, on view in It Takes 2: Unexpected Pairings. Both works reflect on lives lost due to injustice and intolerance using unconventional materials. \n\n\n\nNext\, labor activists Adrienne Andi Sosin and Joel Sosinsky of Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition and Robin Berson of the Workers’ Memorial Quilts discuss their inspiration and how they have worked to memorialize garment workers lost in tragedies like the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire and the Rana Plaza collapse. \n\n\n\nThe program is followed by a hands-on collage workshop where participants can create memorial pieces inspired by the quilts\, honoring those they wish to remember. \n\n\n\nMore information here.

SUMMARY:Art as Memorial: Collage Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Hudson River Museum511 Warburton AvenueYonkers\, NY 10701 \n\n\n\nJanuary 5\, 2025 at 3:30 pm \n\n\n\nRobin Berson’s Workers’ Memorial Quilts\, which inspired this hands-on workshop\, honor victims of garment industry disasters that bookended the past century: the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire of 1911 and the Tazreen fire and Rana Plaza collapse of 2012 and 2013 in Bangladesh\, emphasize the human toll\, particularly of marginalized communities\, while questioning the progress made in labor rights amid global outsourcing. The quilts will be on display for this program. \n\n\n\nParticipants of all ages are invited to bring images of people they would like to memorialize. Historical images will also be supplied as encouragement to take on a character and their story and create an abstract representation of the individual using felt and markers\, mounted on a foam core square\, and also capture memories in writing. \n\n\n\nRobin Berson is a board member of the Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition. \n\n\n\nMore information here.
