SUMMARY:The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire: Presentation and Pop-Up Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Join the Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition and Village Preservation for a talk by historian Daniel Levinson Wilk on the historic 1911 fire and its impact on the community and eventually the country and beyond. In “The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire: A Local Tragedy Felt ‘Round the World\,” Professor Levinson Wilk takes us back to the Greenwich Village of the early 1900s\, with its tenements populated by thousands of immigrant families\, and the immigrant laborers\, many of whom worked in area sweatshops. \n\n\n\nThe talk will be accompanied by a pop-up exhibit featuring replica shirtwaists\, historic news clippings and photos. \n\n\n\nDANIEL LEVINSON WILK is Professor of American History at SUNY-Fashion Institute of Technology and a member of the board of the Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition. DESCRIPTION:Women workers across six countries in Asia have joined together to demand living wages and human rights in a photo petition that just topped 1\,000 workers.  \n\n\n\nWe are asking allies and friends to strengthen their bonds of cross-border solidarity and pledge to participate in a social media action in March to ensure that Nike sees the workers’ faces. Please\, sign up\, and if you can share this with others who may be interested and ask them to sign up in support of these women workers\, that’d be great!  \n\n\n\nNike and other big fashion brands have built a business model that depends on young women workers remaining invisible – but now over 1\,000 workers are coming forward publicly for the first time with a message to Nike! \n\n\n\nThese workers know the risk of standing up to powerful companies and authoritarian systems\, yet they are coming out of the shadows like never before to demand that Nike transform its supply chain to protect workers’ human rights and pay living wages.  \n\n\n\nPlease sign the pledge to share a message to Nike with 1\,000 photos of garment workers in March 2025. And ask members of your organization to take the pledge too! Together\, we will make sure more than 1\,000 people across the US share the image\, tagging key people in and around Nike. \n\n\n\nTogether we can bring garment workers’ voices and faces to Nike’s doorstep.

SUMMARY:Triangle Fire Yahrzeit Kaddish and Kiddush
DESCRIPTION:The Lower East Side remembers its own.  \n\n\n\nStanton Street often hosts a Triangle Fire Kiddush to remember those who perished in 1911 in a blaze that took the lives of 146 young immigrant sweatshop workers in 18 minutes.  \n\n\n\nThey primarily lived in direct proximity to the Stanton Street Shul since they were poor and needed to walk to work at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory or take a trolley to that industrial sweatshop building located off of Washington Square. Almost all were female\, under the age of 21 which meant that young teens were also “employed” at that sweatshop. They were Jewish and Italian\, typically “greenhorns\,” meaning newcomers who had little choice in employment. Most of those who died did so because the factory fire doors on the 9th floor were locked.  \n\n\n\nServices will be held earlier upstairs for those who want to attend\, and will include prayers for those who died on March 25\, 1911.  \n\n\n\nEven as we remember erstwhile immigrants\, we also think of immigrants today. Remembrance\, which is needed for its own sake\, can openly embrace grappling with that contemporary precarious landscape.

Having grown up in poverty\, she endures a work environment plagued by pervasive harassment for the sake of the best paycheck in the county. As retirement approaches\, Lilly discovers that the system had been cheating her\, paying her close to half of what the men with the same jobs were earning. Outraged\, Lilly fights this injustice to the Supreme Court\, the corridors of Congress and eventually The White House all while powerful forces try to shut her down.
